Officials in the island state are striving to determine a pink slime that has materialized on a secluded beach, with certain experts concerned it could be an algae outbreak.
The magenta-hued slime materialized across a portion of a coastal area about 37 miles south of Hobart. A similar sludge has also been documented on parts of a nearby shore and an additional coastal site.
Specimens have been collected and sent to the regulatory body for examination. A spokesperson commented that "algal blooms are a natural event in response to shifts in food sources, temperature, precipitation or sunlight".
"These blooms are occasionally called red or pink tides because the blooms can color the water crimson," the spokesperson said. "Few algal blooms are toxic, with several kinds functioning as a major source of energy for creatures in the oceanic food chain."
"The primary reason of red tides in these seas is the sea plant Noctiluca scintillans, which can cause bioluminescent light displays at night."
Phytoplankton proliferations occur naturally but their rate has increased in the past few years, in part due to climate change and pollution that join together to create food-loaded oceans primed for the quick expansion of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a type of algae that typically function as the ocean's detritus consumers. During a outbreak, there is a quick expansion in their populations that interferes with the proper operation of ecosystems.
These occurrences have been likened to subsurface wildfires and can keep expanding as long as conditions are ripe. In more extreme scenarios, vulnerable aquatic environments can be destroyed as aquatic animals is killed or smothered, providing more nutrients for the bloom.
South Australia not long ago grappled with a severe algae outbreak along its coastal region after a succession of marine heatwaves, which extended across a vast area. The bloom caused swimmers with irritated eyes and hacking coughs and may have caused the death of up to a quarter-million sea creatures across numerous types, according to government calculations.
An estuarine ecologist, who was involved in studying the start of South Australia's outbreak stated, based on photos of the current situation, the probable type involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a type of dinoflagellate also known as "ocean glitter".
"There are numerous of these events around Tassie of late," she remarked.
The scientist said the algae did not generate toxins similar to the organism involved in the previous harmful event, but it does consume small invertebrates and "many fish eggs", meaning marine life were in greatest danger.
"It's common to observe a outbreak of this algae after a bloom of something else, or an event such as a fish reproduction," she added.
A marine scientist, who took samples of the pink sludge in Tasmania, said it seemed the possible outbreak had "expanded greatly" and suggested the fish farming business was the probable cause, referring to similar cases overseas.
"Thus the state needs to deliver a strong warning here, the officials and the EPA need to act to this. We need to examine the examples we've taken and we need to notify the public here," she stated.
The scientist said she had worries for people's well-being after experiencing a tingling sensation along her body while being exposed with tainted seawater.
An environmental foundation has documented dead octopus and deceased marine life appearing on the coast, with a veteran activist labeling the event as an "environmental emergency" and demanding the state premier to visit and "lead the reaction that officials must be undertaking".
"He needs to realize this is a crisis in the unfolding, commercially as well as environmentally."
Speaking to reporters, the premier stated he was uninformed of any relationships between the algal bloom and the farming business, stating scientific testing was needed before judgments could be made.
