Powerful Winds Cause Tens of Thousands Without Power in New Zealand

Storm damage in New Zealand
Residents advised to stay indoors as strong winds lash the region.

Intense winds hitting velocities of as high as 155km/h (96mph) have resulted in around 90,000 homes experiencing outages and forced agencies to halt in excess of 100 air travel services, as reported by local media.

These gusts are influencing the complete southern region and southern sections of the northern region, as stated by the country's meteorological service.

New Zealand authorities have issued infrequent severe gust advisories - the most severe warning - in central regions encompassing Wellington and Canterbury.

Locals have been advised to avoid going outside, refrain from journeys, and get ready for further utility disruptions.

Extensive Damage and Crisis Response

The power cut is primarily influencing homes mostly in the South Island, though officials say that energy was being gradually reinstated.

Local media have reported that in various locations homes have lost their roofs, whereas utility poles and vegetation have been toppled by the gusts.

Across Wellington, a man was killed after being hit by a wooden fragment at a popular trail walking spot on earlier this week.

Additionally in the city, a woman was swept into oncoming traffic on a street by a powerful blast, in a event that was recorded in a viral dashcam video.

Aircraft services in and out of the city have been suspended due to the weather, while certain highways and community centers are not operating.

Meanwhile Canterbury officials have announced a emergency situation, to facilitate emergency management operations.

Work Stoppages During Severe Weather

The wild winds on Thursday come as numerous of educators, medical professionals and government employees are participating in what has been described as a "major walkout", demanding improved salaries and workplace environments.

Yet the intense climate has forced them to modify certain arrangements, with several external protests shifted to interior venues or called off.

Similar gusts are also sweeping Australia, bringing a high-temperature event to the remote areas.

Agencies have announced fire bans for apprehension regarding forest fires.
