No Fewer Than 6 Lose Their Lives in Stampede at Ghana Armed Forces Enlistment Event
No fewer than six individuals have lost their lives during a stampede at a armed forces enlistment gathering held in a sports arena in the West African nation.
The Wednesday's "devastating" incident appeared to have been caused by "an unexpected surge of applicants who overcame security measures and rushed into the entrances," announced a statement from Ghana's armed forces.
22 others were hurt, among them five who are in serious state.
A large crowd had turned up at the El-Wak sports venue, in the main city, the capital, with the hope of joining the military.
Ghana has a youth unemployment rate of about 32%, the latest official data indicate, and such recruitment events normally attract massive gatherings and frequently lead to disorderly situations.
The closing date to apply for this recruitment was extended by a seven days to allow for additional candidates, as some had experienced difficulties in the process.
Military representative Capt Veronica Adzo Arhin said the crush occurred ahead of the planned commencement time of 06:20 GMT.
The nation's leader John Mahama has visited the wounded in medical care.
Order has been reestablished, and the recruitment exercise has since started.
