A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” stated the national leader.
The official announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in public projects. They were built at an accelerated pace, defying expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an urgent halt in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and management of these national initiatives.
