The renowned publisher has secured a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the development team at 31st Union, which is currently developing the upcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.
The new appointee steps into the leadership position at 31st Union following the departure of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' lackluster initial reveal last autumn.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer informed employees about this strategic move through an internal memo, which stressed that playtesting had indicated the necessity for a distinct direction.
Ismailer stated that the developers is now overhauling the project with a refreshed vision, aiming to better meet community desires.
This announcement follows a comparable action taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they recruited an industry veteran from Blizzard to work on the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the entire text from the president's memo:
Dear Team—
I know you all just finished your gathering - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Last time I shared you all a update, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most driven and talented creators we have had the chance to partner with - and we’re excited for that relationship to continue.”
Through your commitment and flexibility, especially over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The gamer responses from last autumn’s Project ETHOS testing phase was informative. It validated the potential of a action-packed game but told us we still had improvements to make. It revealed the need for a sharper vision.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve advanced. You took the input to mind and reimagined the title with a refreshed direction - one that’s ready to fulfill its potential to our audience.
The belief in Project ETHOS grows every day. To advance the outstanding advancement you’ve made, I’m excited to announce the new hire as the new Lead of 31st Union. Following several months of talks, he starts with us on Monday, October 20.
His guidance and expertise in the PVP shooter space is considerable, having spent the recent years developing and overseeing some of the most recognizable titles in the industry, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, the battle royale hit.
I invite you all in greeting him next week. We are all excited to continue witnessing the development of the game in the months to follow.
The President
The appointee presently holds the role of executive producer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. He earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in multiple production roles on the Call of Duty series, and, prior to that, had stints at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Project Ethos was announced in last year together with a community playtest. At the time, the developers presented the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an exciting step forward on the genre."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the official summary states. "Face the competition with unique powers, stakes, and challenges that change every session. Will you leave securely with your collected items? Or take a risk, gamble everything, and hope your squad can earn top ranking? The option is up to you."
Project Ethos does not have an announced release date or supported systems, but players can look forward to more updates as development progresses.
